The capital of Karnataka, Bangalore, was founded by a local chieftain, Kempe Gowda, in the 16th century. But its turn to prominence was under Tipu Sultan who converted it into a summer capital. The Wodeyars also contributed to the city's beautification; sprawling gardens and palaces sprung up in all corners of the city. Under the British, Bangalore underwent a personality-change: the pretty city became a well-oiled administrative centre as well.
Bangalore's climate is said to draw in the tourist. Built under a green canopy (the city has 40 per cent tree cover) so to speak, it's an inviting ambience. The numerous parks, tree-lined avenues are a soothing sight in what would have been a jungle of concrete. Brightly lit shopping malls, lively pubs and nightclubs often have their private gardens that allow people to extend their evening outdoors. A taste for nightlife has thankfully not uprooted tradition. The idea of a fun evening is still with the family at home; at discos, young and old, boogey the night away draped in rich Bangalore silks.
